Springfield Interchange Improvements - Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT)

Project Summary

This project for the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Department of Transportation (VDOT) was divided into eight phases and comprised improvements of the Springfield Interchange at I-95, I-395, and the Beltway (I-495 and I-95); the interchange at I-95 and Old Keene Mill Road (Route 644); and adjacent interstate and local roadways in Springfield, Virginia. Work occurred over about three miles of the Shirley Highway system, about two miles along the Beltway, and more than one mile of Route 644. The basic design objective was to relocate the high-speed, through-traffic to the center of the right-of-way (“ROW”) and relocate the slower local, merging traffic to the outsides of the ROW. An important part of the project was to construct safe acceleration, deceleration, and merge lanes.
