St. Louis, Missouri

Project Summary

The enhanced Gateway Arch National Park reopened in July 2018 to national acclaim, the result of a design competition to redesign its grounds in a way that would connect it back to the city. In its construction management role, Alpha oversaw projects ranging from new building construction and renovations to utility infrastructure and civil construction. Component projects encompass the renovated and expanded Museum of Western Expansion and Visitor Center, North and South Grounds renovations, North Gateway project, Luther Ely Smith Square project, Old Courthouse Temporary Visitor Center and accessibility project, a ranger station, and the repair of the North and South Park Grounds Overlook Staircases. Of particular note is the Luther Ely Smith Square project, which replaced an existing park and constructed a new public space over the sunken lanes of I-44 to connect the Old Courthouse at the western end of the site to the Gateway Arch. Based on Dan Kiley’s original landscape design, the redesigned park showcases Eero Saarinen’s 1967 Arch, at 630 feet the nation’s tallest monument.
