Williamsport, Maryland

Project Summary

The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Park historic stone wall, towpath, and canal extends along the Potomac River from Washington, DC to Cumberland, Maryland. The purpose of this project was to rehabilitate a one-mile section of existing retaining stonewall and to stabilize the towpath from McMahon’s Mill to Lock 42 in Williamsport, Maryland. This project focused on providing a sustainable solution to lessen flood impacts to the towpath. Meticulously rebuilding and extending the wall required frequent inspections, close monitoring of the Potomac River’s behavior and flow, and careful attention to any potential environmental impacts including erosion and sediment control. The team successfully preserved the history of the retaining wall allowing visitors to safely embrace and experience the local landscape for generations to come.
