Arlington, Virginia
Project Summary
The Memorial Pylons located in the Women’s Military Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery are often the first monumental structures that visitors see at the cemetery. Protecting and preserving such a historic site is important to maintaining the hallowed grounds. The pylons, spanning just under 60 feet and 750 tons, presented a unique challenge.
The stabilization of the pylons was critical in preventing further leaning and damage. The design efforts using deep foundation methods below the existing foundations were coordinated and prepared to not only stabilize the massive structures, but also to level them back to their original resting places. The condition of the surrounding earth provided less than half of the support required for the size and weight of the massive structures.
Our team’s efforts included finding the most efficient solution while honoring such an important location in American history that honors those who have served our country.
