Bethesda, Maryland
Project Summary
The MD 355 Multi-Modal Crossing (BRAC) project is at the intersection of MD 355/Rockville Pike and South Wood Road/South Drive. The densely populated and developed area inside the Capital Beltway (I-495) is adjacent to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Naval Support Activity-Bethesda (NSAB), which is home to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. The six lanes of traffic on MD 355 bring very high traffic volume for access to not only the neighboring facilities, who bring thousands of visitors and employees, but also commuter traffic going to and from the DC metropolitan area.
This Design-Build project involved construction of a below grade multi-modal crossing of MD 355 between NIH and the National Naval Medical Center. The project included escalators, elevators, a deep connection to the existing metro station, and improvements to the metro station platforms.
This exemplary infrastructure project is the result of combining the visions of multiple levels of government, the technical expertise of best-in-class designers and builders, the progressive thinking of the program management team, and the will of the stakeholders to achieve a result which positively affects over 15,000 people per day. With safety as the driving purpose, over 11,000 mass transit patrons, thousands of employees of both NIH and NSAB, and over 10,000 commuters a day can now find safe passage between these two important facilities.
